SALONS

A series of Tuesday evening Salons will be offered during the 2021-2022 year. More information will be available soon.

PAST SALONS

March 12, 2019 and May 14, 2019 from 6:30 – 9 p.m.

You may attend one or both but each salon is free standing and independent of the others.

The format will be an informal gathering at the home or office of the presenter with an opportunity for socializing with wine and snacks followed by discussion of one or two papers which will be available prior to the Salon for review.

The first Salon, scheduled for Tuesday, March 12, 2019, will focus on a review of South African psychoanalyst Dr. Mark Solm’s writings in anticipation of his visit to Vermont on April 5 as the guest speaker for the Annual Gibbard Award and Lecture and on April 6 for the VIP Spring meeting. Our Salon will be facilitated by VIP faculty member Dr. Stella Marrie with location and readings still to be finalized. The papers will be selected to provide background for the topics that Dr. Solms will be addressing during his presentations in Vermont.

The second Salon is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14, 2019 and will be facilitated by VIP faculty member Dr. Alice Silverman. The topic will be deprescribing, a new topic in critical psychiatry which focuses on the reduction or discontinuation of medications as an important option to consider in pychiatric treatment. This salon will focus on the psychodynamic meanings of medication use and discontinuation with a paper to read by Dr. David Mintz, Erin Seery and John Cahill from Austin-Riggs and Yale entitled ‘Deprescribing: A Psychoanalytically-Informed, Patient Centered Perspective.’ The Salon will be held at Dr. Silverman’s home office in Montpelier and will be useful to both psychiatrists and non prescribing psychotherapists who have concerns about either adverse effects, lack of efficacy and/or possible nocebo effects of psychotropic medications and how to approach this issue thoughtfully and collaboratively with ones patient and prescriber.

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. All Salons are free (though donations to cover snacks will be accepted) but pre-registration is required as space will be limited. To pre-register for one or all of the salons please contact the individual presenters for each session via email which is listed below. Links to readings for each salon as well as address and directions will be provided when you pre-register.
